Forgotten Items (EDS). We have noticed an increase in the number of parents who are bringing in items which children have forgotten or left in the car. Whilst we appreciate parents are doing this so students can participate in PE and other lessons or to avoid being demerited for forgetting items. It is becoming a habit for some students who are not taking responsibility for being organised and ready to learn. It is disruptive to lessons for teachers’ to sort out a student who does not have their books or equipment, so I appreciate parents intentions to support the school. Please allow students to experience the reprimand and awkward conversations with their teacher. Students will be given a demerit for organisation and this could lead to further actions; for example detention if they do this a number of times. Students will be asked to write up any work completed on paper into their exercise books. However, experiencing this will allow the student to mature and take responsibility for their belongings and organisation. It is all part of being at secondary school. Students who accumulate a number of organisation demerits will be given support to help them with this. However, with parents bringing in items we sometimes miss the trend. It must also be a great frustration to the parents who have to come back out to deliver these items.
On a similar note; students who have appointments and are required to leave during the school day. Please could students make a note in their organiser or phone to remind themselves when they need to leave or if they should not get on the bus etc. We are currently having to message teachers to pass messages on to the children this is often missed by teaching staff as they are teaching. It is then an inconvenience for office staff to drop what they are doing to fetch students from lessons.
Over the summer I read an interesting blog post titled ‘Are we making our children too fragile’ which said:
“As educators we have to take a lead in teaching our children, and parents, that life’s everyday knocks are not to feared or removed. They are to be understood, accepted and overcome – with a confidence that we have within us sufficient resources to withstand the storm”. |

- Please check with tutors regarding various fundraising activities. On Friday 3rd December, 7.9 will be selling hot chocolate and doughnuts at breaktime to raise money for their chosen charity.
- Book looks continue in tutor time. Please ensure you are responding to feedback with purple pen and presenting your work to the highest standards. This is another chance to receive ‘EXCELLENT’ commendations.
- Please remember to check your home study timetable and complete home study by the deadline. You must hand the work in in on the due date. If you fail to do so you will receive a demerit and you will have to hand it in to the LIBRARY the following day.
- Remember that, should you need additional support, home study club is available in IT3 at lunchtimes and from 3 – 4pm after school in the library, Monday – Thursday. There are staff available to help at these times.
- Thinking and reflecting on your day ask yourself the following questions….
- What did I learn today?

- Do I need to revisit the work to help my understanding?’
- What do I need to practise?

Retrieval Practice Study Skills workshops Year 12 and 13 students have taken part in Study Skills sessions over the past 2 weeks with a focus on their Independent Studies and particularly Retrieval Practice. In the sessions and booklets handed out, students used specific subject content to apply in the Retrieval Practice tasks. We discussed “How the Memory Works” and different tips and tricks that can help with enhancing memory during Independent Study Sessions.
Sixth Form Table Tennis success The under 19 table tennis team consisting of Brett Bentley (capt); Jake Vaughan; Arthur Lomax; Max Bannon went to the Dorset Schools Table Tennis Competition held at the David Lloyd Centre in Bournemouth. Here they played a round robin competition against five other schools from the county. The boys went on to end the competition undefeated, and win the competition. They will now go on to represent Dorset County at the South West Area Finals in Plymouth on 16th January 2022.
Celebrating EPQ Last week the EPQ department were pleased to welcome two guests from local universities. The first was from the University of Bournemouth when we were successfully awarded the whole Sixth form winners prize for their Bournemouth Young Researchers’ Prize 2021. We submitted eight entries from our current Year 13 Highcliffe Sixth Form and the quality of each submission was incredibly high from all of our students. Two students were shortlisted as runner up award winners and we were selected as the Sixth Form to win the whole Sixth Form winners prize. Our second guest was from the University of Southampton who carried out a “virtual lecture” on research and note taking skills with our current Year 12 EPQ students to best prepare them for their report writing and studies at university.
Model United Nations Since half term a new Model United Nations club has seen Sixth Formers pick up the mantle of diplomats and debate issues of the day from the perspectives of the countries they represent. So far the Sixth Formers have discussed an array of issues from the conflict in Yemen to Climate Change, debating solutions and negotiating agreements.
Year 13 Mock Exams Year 13 mock exams take place from Tuesday 4th January to Wednesday 12th January. Study leave will be granted from Tuesday 4th January to Friday 7th January. Students who have exams on Monday 10th January to Wednesday 12th January will continue study leave, until the point they have completed their exams. They will then be expected to attend lessons immediately after completing their exams.
Year 13 Student Consultants Year 13 student consultants have been working with Mrs Keyworth on exploring the future of student leadership within the school. This diverse group of students have raised a wide range of new and interesting ideas which they will continue to discuss in the new year.
Year 12 Student Union Year 12 had a successful student union meeting in November. They discussed positive Sixth form improvements such as healthier school catering options and how they can keep their Sixth form social environment well maintained.
They also discussed charities they would like to support and potential social events that they can begin planning over the coming year. The students have begun planning some in-year sporting events to bring everybody together and are even conjuring up a staff vs student quiz event.
We are encouraging students to become ambassadors to the lower school so one of our wonderful students has volunteered to lead with setting up a Year 11 mentoring programme which we hope to get up and running this year. The Year 12 students are also really keen to support the official charity by making christmas jumper day the biggest ever – so keep an eye out for festive pics of all the wonderful jumpers on display. |
